Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
